Top Off the Kitchen Cabinets

Take advantage of the display space above your kitchen cabinets. I began by adding soft lighting which is very effective during the evening and night time hours.
Rope lighting is made of PVC tube with a series of clear miniature bulbs spaced 1" apart. It is available in 1.5' to 150' strands and it is a very affordable way to add lighting above the cabinets. You can purchase it in custom lengths, and it has a long burning life.

Obviously, you must take your vertical space into consideration when purchasing items for your cabinet tops. Cabinets that have crown molding, such as the ones pictured here, have a top that is recessed about 4". These cabinets have only about 12" of space between the cabinet top and the ceiling, so it was rather difficult to find items that would fit. Also, due to the crown molding, many items must be placed on a 2"-4" base in order to show. I used blocks of styrofoam as bases.
I am always finding new things to display on top of the cabinets.
At Christmas time, I sometimes display my Dicken's Village above the cabinets. It is a challenge to get it up there, especially making the little characters and accessories show, but once it is finished, it is outstanding!

I love the way the lighting gives many of the items a warm glow, and sometimes even makes them look transluscent.
