To make this crib set, I decided to do something different than I had done in the past. Before, I purchased a pre-made bumper pad at the fabric store. The thing I didn't care for when using this technique was that the bumper pads were in four different sections, one for each side of the crib, and they had to be tied together. Lots of ties, and lots of trouble when changing the crib sheets. Instead, I went to Babys-R-Us and bought a bumper pad. I just decided to recover one that was all one piece instead of starting from scratch in making one.
I carefully measured the full length of the bumper pad, then cut fabric that size, adding three inches to the length and two inches to the height. Since the fabric was only 60" wide, I had to seam the strips of fabric. I then stitched the front and back fabrics together, inserting covered welting (figure A) to the top seam and leaving the bottom seam open. I inserted the pre-made bumper into the "pocket" of fabric, then slip-stitched the bottom edge together by hand. (figure B)
The next task was figuring out how to attach the two ends of the bumper pad together.
I added tabs to one end of the bumper, then used Velcro squares for closure. (Figure C) I hand-stitched cream-colored cording at the crib corners and mid-way on the sides so that the pad could be tied to the crib sides. (Figure D)
I made a crib-size coverlet, using squares of the different silk fabrics for the top, soft blue suede cloth for the underneath side, and black and white edging. (Figures F and G) Using the silk fabric I had left, I made two crib pillow covers, and filled them with fiber-fill.
The crib skirt was made with the silk fabric, using box-pleats rather than a ruffle that went almost to the floor.
The crib set was complete!
