Baby's Nursery

jkI ordered the teddy bear pictures online, and framed them with black frames and off-white mats.  I also found a black plaque that said “Now I lay me down to sleep…”  I still needed something a little different, so I continued to look for ideas.

One night, I was walking around the fabric and craft store (one of my favorite pastimes) and I came across an idea that was unique to me.  That started the ol’ “craft rush” that I get when I am on the verge of a new project!

I had seen kid’s names on the wall in all different ways: hung with ribbon, painted, stained, and decorated in many different ways.  I hadn’t seen this new idea, though, and the possibilities were limitless!  I saw these letters that were adorned with scrapbooking papers and embellishments, and while they were shown on the lid of a wooden box, I decided that they would be a great addition to the nursery wall.  My daughter and her husband helped me out because they decided upon a name several months before the baby was due.  My first task was to find the letters R – I – L – E – Y, then the fun began.  Here are the instructions:

Supplies:

  • 7” wooden letters with a flat front surface (I used wooden letters)
  • Various scrapbook papers
  • Scrapbook embellishments:
  • Rub-off word transfers
  • Buttons
  • Ribbon
  • Jute string
  • Letter tiles
  • Sticky dots
  • Mod Podge
  • Paint brush
  • Glue gun and glue
  • Acrylic Paint

Step 1:

Lay out the scrapbook papers in the order of your preference.  I chose papers that were relatively plain, and in colors that coordinated with the nursery colors.

Once you have decided which papers will go on each letter, turn the sheets of paper over, face down.

Place the wooden letters face down on the scrapbook paper, and using a sharp pencil, trace around the front edge of the letter.

Carefully cut out the letters.

Step 2:

Base coat the wooden letters with the acrylic paint, making sure all edges are well covered. Allow the paint to dry. If the paint raises the grain in the wood, sand the letters with fine sandpaper, and apply a second coat of acrylic paint. Let the letters dry thoroughly for 2-3 hours.

Step 3:

Beginning with one letter at a time, coat the front surface of the wooden letter with Mod Podge. Place the paper cut-out letter on the front of the wooden letter, and press firmly, making sure that the letter thoroughly adheres. Coat the front of the paper-covered letter with Mod Podge. Let dry. Repeat with another coat of Mod Podge. Allow to dry thoroughly.

Step 4: (Now the fun begins)

Adorn each letter with scrapbook embellishments.  You can rub on word transfers such as “precious,” “big boy,” “baby,” etc. Decorate each letter differently, using ribbons, buttons and bows.

Step 5:

Once the glue is dry, and using a level and tape measure, hang the letters on the wall, either horizontally or vertically.

These letters are unique, and the only real time-consuming part of making them is deciding what scrapbook supplies to buy!  With so many things available, it’s hard to choose!
