Choosing the Furniture
It's a Boy!
Now, although I have learned to be much more patient over the years, there are still times I am a little impatient! The problem was that my daughter’s ultrasound appointment was scheduled for the week AFTER Spring Break. Being a big time planner (like her mother), my daughter and her husband decided they wanted to know the gender of the baby as soon as possible. Of course, I had told her that if they say it’s a boy, it’s a pretty sure thing that it will be a boy, but if they say it’s a girl, it’s not quite as certain. (Sometimes little guys like to play hide-and-seek, you know.)
We knew that I couldn’t go back to see her until school was out in June, and we knew weneeded to get started with the nursery. My son-in-law’s solution?....they went to an independent agency and paid for a 3-D ultrasound. They had to…Grandma was coming and there was shopping to do! Well, there was no hide-and-seek in this little guy’s case, and we knew for sure, 100%, without a doubt that it was a boy! Three grandsons! That was fine with me!
The day after I arrived, my daughter and I set out to search for furniture. She had decided that she wanted to get a convertible bed so that it could be used in the toddler years, and that was about all she had decided. We also knew that we were working with limited space for the nursery, but his future bedroom was good-sized. We started at the typical baby superstores, but after walking around
a little aimlessly, we decided that we were going to hit a little more specialized local baby store. At this store, she chose the ___ crib in black with a matching armoire. The advantages were that the bed would convert to a queen size headboard (and footboard if wanted), and the armoire could be converted to a TV armoire in future years. I felt she made a good choice. The black would be great for a little guy, and we decided that even if she wanted to use the furniture
for a future little girl someday, pink and black can be smashing!
The next choice was a glider. My daughter sat in them all, and decided upon a neutral cream glider and ottoman that would sit in the master bedroom (remember, it’s attached to the nursery.) A small black bookcase, and the nursery was furnished.
As we were walking around the baby store, we came across the cutest thing. Since the baby’s room is upstairs, we decided that it would be a great benefit to have a downstairs crib, too. There it was – a mini-replica of the nursery crib, only it had a mattress the size of a pack-n-play. The mattress was adjustable in height, just like a regular crib, and the black would look great with the décor of the downstairs. It was a must have!
All the furniture had to be ordered, but that seemed like it should be no problem because the baby wasn’t due until the first of September, and it was only early April. I might add at this point that the armoire was delivered three days before the baby was born, and the glider and ottoman didn’t make it for the homecoming! We were not pleased about that, but what do you do? Wouldn’t you think that since you can’t find out the gender of the baby until sometime during the fourth month that the furniture should come in before the birth? Go figure…
Furniture brochures in hand, we were off to find a theme for our baby’s room…
