Choosing the Fabrics
Baby's Nursery
Once I learned that I was going to be a grandma again, I started spending a lot of time looking for nursery ideas on the Internet. What I soon learned was that in order to get a top quality crib set in the finest of fabrics, it would cost more than $1000! Some were even much higher. Of course, at the time I was searching, I still didn’t know if the baby would be a boy or a girl, so I was looking for ideas for both. I knew that spending that kind of money on a crib set was pushing the budget, so I decided that I would make the crib set. I had made crib sets before, and I could do it again…
My daughter and I went to the most amazing fabric store called Boca Bargoons. This store has locations in Arizona, Texas, Florida, and one in Atlanta, Georgia. Lucky us! We were shopping in Atlanta. I must admit that the store was overwhelming in the beginning, and we actually got lost in all the rows of fabric
bolts. They handed us scissors and note paper, however, and we were able to snip samples as we shopped, labeling them according to their location. After about two hours in this top-notch fabric store, we ended up with an assortment of silk fabrics in shades of cream, white and taupe. We also purchased a very soft blue “suede cloth” fabric for linings that would touch the baby, and a tan chenille for the outside of the bumper pads. I cut it close on the fabric yardage because the price was high, but I ended up being able to make a crib skirt, bumper pad cover, two little crib pillows, and a coverlet. I chose a black and white print to cover the welting on the bumper pads, just to tie in a little black so it would coordinate with the crib. I packed the fabrics in my bag before I took off for home, and my goal was to have the crib set finished in time for the shower in May. And that, I did… I was able to dress our little guy’s crib in the best of fabrics for under $300 – much, much better, don’t you think? (We won’t count the labor cost!) :)
